Case Study: Brown Bear Bioremediation Equipment Helps Clean Up Contaminated Soil

Project: The Nova Group at the U.S. Navy Craney Island Fuel Depot in Portsmouth, VA, used Brown Bear bioremediation equipment to clean up a large area of oil-contaminated soil.

Challenge: The project involved treating 200,000 to 300,000 tons of soil with contamination levels ranging from 100 to 20,000 ppm. The goal was to reduce the contamination levels to below 1,000 ppm.

Solution: The contractor used a Brown Bear 500 to manage and aerate the contaminated soil in a 1,000 x 600-foot cell, treating 17,000 to 30,000 tons of material per season cycle.1 The Brown Bear 500 maintained moisture and aerobic conditions within the soil using a combination of fertilizers, enzymes, and wood chips/straw.1 Notably, this project did not involve introducing bacterial cultures.

Results: The project successfully reduced contaminant levels from 21,000 ppm to less than 100 ppm in just 83 days.

Benefits of Using Brown Bear Equipment:

Effective Remediation: The Brown Bear 500 effectively aerated and mixed the soil, facilitating the natural bioremediation process. This led to a significant reduction in contaminant levels within a relatively short time frame.

Versatility: Brown Bear equipment can be used for a variety of tasks, making it a valuable asset for environmental remediation projects. For example, the Brown Bear 500 can be equipped with different attachments for tasks like soil mixing, windrow turning, and material handling.

Cost Savings: By accelerating the remediation process, Brown Bear equipment can help reduce overall project costs. This is particularly important for large-scale projects like the Craney Island cleanup.

Key Features of Brown Bear Equipment for Bioremediation:

Powerful Engines: Brown Bear tractors are equipped with powerful engines, enabling them to handle large volumes of soil and challenging terrain.

Specialized Attachments: A range of specialized attachments, such as aerators and composters, are available to optimize bioremediation processes.

Durability and Reliability: Brown Bear equipment is built for durability and reliability, ensuring consistent performance in demanding conditions.

The Nova Group’s successful use of Brown Bear equipment at the Craney Island Fuel Depot highlights the effectiveness of these machines for bioremediation applications. By providing efficient soil management and aeration, Brown Bear equipment can significantly accelerate the cleanup of contaminated soil, reducing environmental impact and project costs.

This case study demonstrates how Brown Bear bioremediation equipment can be a valuable solution for environmental cleanup projects, contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment.
