The Benefits of Bioremediation with the Brown Bear Auger Tractor

Bioremediation is a rapidly growing method for treating and disposing of organic waste. This method utilizes bacteria to degrade organic materials, leaving behind only harmless byproducts such as carbon dioxide, water, ash, and microbial cells. The process can be done on-site with minimal space and equipment, leading to lower costs and reduced long-term liability.

One company leading the way in bioremediation is YWC Inc., which has subsidiaries in several states across the US. In partnership with Solmar Corp., a provider of bacterial cultures, and Brown Bear Corp., a manufacturer of large auger tractors, YWC is implementing bioremediation strategies for various contaminated solids and waters.

A key piece of equipment in YWC’s bioremediation process is the Brown Bear auger tractor. This machine offers several advantages over traditional methods, such as:

  • Increased efficiency and speed: The Brown Bear can effectively turn piles of earth up to 60 inches deep, covering double the lineal footage compared to older equipment. This allows for faster degradation of contaminants by aerating the material and distributing oil-eating bacteria more efficiently.
  • Improved performance in wet conditions: The Brown Bear’s flotation and traction allow it to work in wet weather conditions that would typically hinder other equipment. Features like a no-spin differential, limited-slip differential, and select steering further enhance its traction. Additionally, the machine’s ability to work in wet conditions allows for an earlier start in spring.
  • Enhanced bacterial activity: The windrows created by the Brown Bear promote better water runoff and heat retention, leading to improved bacterial action and faster degradation of contaminants.
  • Operator comfort and safety: The Brown Bear is equipped with a pressurized cab, comfortable seating, a heater, air conditioning, and a stereo-radio, improving operator comfort and efficiency.

To ensure successful bioremediation, several parameters are regularly monitored and adjusted as needed. These include:

  • BioCultures: After the initial seeding, booster cultures are added at regular intervals to maintain a healthy bacterial population.
  • Oxygen content: Maintaining oxygen levels at 10 ppm or higher is crucial for bacterial activity.
  • Nitrogen: Nitrogen levels are kept above 5 ppm to support optimal bacterial growth.
  • pH: Bacterial activity is highest at a pH of 7 and decreases with every 1 pH difference.
  • Temperature: Bioremediation occurs most efficiently between 85°-95°F, with acceptable rates between 55°-105°F.

By combining the efficiency of the Brown Bear auger tractor with careful monitoring and adjustment of environmental parameters, YWC Inc. is successfully implementing bioremediation as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution for organic waste disposal.
